If we advance from these rather primitive forms, we can look for alterations along three lines:
(i) Stretching out the forms by further use of
'prolonging' elements; (ii) Alterations of the surface texture by variants
of the simple harmonies; (iii) New tone-colours by new and varied constructions of the orchestra. These developments will be considered in later chapters. |
